161st Colloquium of the Centre for Scientific Information

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 23, 2025, starting at 14:30

Dr. David Sanders, Purdue University

Ethics of Scientific Publication — Deficient Institutional Responses

Explore how institutional passivity threatens the integrity of scientific publications and what potential solutions exist for strengthening the responsibility of authors, reviewers, scientific journals, and research institutions.

We invite you to join the 161st colloquium of the Centre for Scientific Information, where Dr. David Sanders, Associate Professor of Biological Sciences at Purdue University, Indiana, will discuss the responsibility of all stakeholders in scientific publishing in maintaining the integrity of scientific publications.

Did you know? Most retractions of research papers are due to unethical behavior, rather than unintentional errors – highlighting the ongoing need for institutional reform in research ethics.

Science is built on trust in authors, data, and publications that remain as lasting results of research. While authors and reviewers play a crucial role in maintaining the quality of scientific papers, the burden of responsibility does not fall solely on them – institutions and journals also have an important role to play. Dr. Sanders will focus on the issue of institutional passivity and offer concrete solutions for strengthening responsibility in scientific publishing. This lecture is relevant for anyone involved in scientific work – from researchers and reviewers to editors and administrative bodies within research organizations.

Dr. Sanders is frequently invited to speak on ethics, biological defense, evolution, and gene therapy, particularly regarding ethical issues in scientific publishing. You can find more information about the speaker and an abstract of the lecture in the attachment.

The lecture will be held on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 14:30 in the lecture hall located in Wing 1 of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, with an expected duration of 60 minutes. The lecture will be in English, and open to the public.

Join us and be part of the movement toward a more transparent and responsible scientific practice.
