FAIR in Higher Education - Handbook for creating a FAIR curriculum and Report on successful case studies

Written by

The management and preservation of research data according to FAIR principles are gaining importance, occupying a strategic position within university institutional work programs. Higher education institutions across Europe and the world recognize that proper research data management (RDM) is crucial to keeping up with the digital transition of scientific production and knowledge dissemination, while also promoting a better understanding and acceptance of open research processes, known as open science. The European project "Fostering FAIR data practices in Europe" (FAIRsFAIR), aimed at developing and providing practical solutions to support the implementation and use of FAIR principles throughout the lifecycle of research data, also seeks to assist higher education institutions in integrating these principles into their curriculum and programs.

The handbook "How to be FAIR with your data: A teaching and training handbook for higher education institutions" is designed as practical material that defines guidelines and models for curricula, learning outcomes, and supporting information in the field of research data management. The handbook also includes feedback from the community collected from 272 universities across 36 European countries between July 27 and September 12, 2021. To integrate FAIR content into education, it's necessary to define the knowledge and skills that students need to acquire at different educational levels. The handbook proposes necessary competency profiles that institutions can integrate into their curricula or use to develop new curricula based on FAIR principles. The handbook presents a structured approach to a course model that can help educators better understand and express the importance of learning outcomes for different groups, the complexity of learning at different levels, and the choice of training formats.

Additionally, the report "Good Practices in FAIR Competence Education" has been published, showcasing seven case studies of the implementation of FAIR principles in education and training programs. This report of good practices describes successful examples of integrating research data management and FAIR-related skills into university plans and programs, providing insight into how these skills are applied in higher education institutions. It serves as inspiration and a source of practical examples from higher education, illustrating how partner institutions and organizations approached the improvement of teaching research data management skills and FAIR principles at all university levels - undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies.
